My Godson, Autism
His father,
a doctor,
who I befriended
at a camp
for troubled teens
years ago
when we were still
bones
and confusion,
tells me
my godson
isn’t crawling
as he should,
isn’t speaking
early enough,
isn’t able
to this and that
as his wife, silent, drinks wine
the color of stop signs;
I ask what he can do
and he tells me
a list
a long list,
a list that goes on
and on
with such beauty
that we can only sit and watch him
on the floor,
this bright dynamite
of potential.
